Safe Winter Salting!Road salt is a necessary tool for keeping streets and sidewalks safe during Northeastern Ohio winters, but its environmental impact is significant. Excess salt pollutes surface and groundwater, harms aquatic life, and damages soil and plants, while also corroding infrastructure and vehicles. With 20 million tons of salt used annually in the U.S., its effects are cumulative and long-lasting. To address this, Summit SWCD and partners are promoting Winter Salt Awareness Week, January 27-31, 2025, to educate the public on smarter salt use. Simple actions like shoveling snow early, using salt sparingly, sweeping excess salt, and avoiding application below 15°F can help reduce salt runoff, protect water quality, and save money while keeping walkways safe.

Native Plant Sales:Summit Soil and Water Conservation District is excited to support local and regional native plant sales in 2025! This spring, many Soil and Water Conservation Districts will host native plant sales, offering a variety of herbaceous plants, groundcovers, shrubs, and trees to enhance your landscape. Additionally, several local native plant nurseries in our area provide an excellent opportunity to explore and select your favorite native plants in person. Embrace native plants to create a healthier, more sustainable environment!
