Ricky the Aquatic Sowbug
Ricky was never your typical sowbug. While his peers spent their days nibbling on decaying leaves, exploring freshwater habitats, and hiding under rocks, Ricky always had a sense that there was more to life. He was known for venturing farther from his leafy home than any other sowbug dared, driven by an adventurous spirit that set him apart. Ricky’s parents encouraged him to follow his curiosity and to help protect their community from the environmental dangers they faced, though Ricky wasn’t quite sure how to take on such a big role.
One day, while exploring a nearby stream, Ricky noticed a group of tall creatures wearing strange suits—humans from Summit Soil and Water Conservation District. Intrigued, he watched as they tested the water and collected samples. Suddenly, Ricky found himself swept up in a net and placed into a tray alongside other stream-dwelling creatures. He quickly realized that the humans were using him and his friends to assess the health of the water. During this encounter, Ricky struck up a conversation with one of the staff members, sharing his love of exploration and desire to make a bigger impact. The employee smiled and told him she had the perfect role for him—becoming their mascot! Excited by the idea, Ricky eagerly accepted. Before he knew it, he was sporting a Summit Soil and Water Conservation District badge and a big smile. From that day on, Ricky became the face of the District’s commitment to protecting the environment. He traveled far and wide, educating people on the importance of clean water and land. Though Ricky may be small, his adventurous spirit and big heart have inspired many to take action and make a difference in the world around them. #rickysswcd |
