In an effort to reduce the negative impacts of construction activity on water quality, Summit SWCD offers technical assistance to communities and landowners in Summit County to better manage the natural resources in a rapidly developing county. Best management practices (BMPs) are included as part of the SWP3 to help minimize erosion, off site sedimentation, and non-sediment pollution discharges. A Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWP3) is a site-specific document designed to help prevent stormwater pollution during construction activities. For more information on SWP3s, construction activity and post-construction requirements please go to the following:

It’s important to determine if your site has any protected areas such as wetlands, floodplains, streams, or riparian areas. These features may require additional permitting in order to complete your project. And even if you aren’t disturbing these protected areas, additional documentation may be required. If you think you may have a protected area on your site, feel free to contact our office for more information and guidance. Please go to the following for riparian setback information:
Riparian Setback Areas
Once the construction site is completed and the Stormwater Control Measures (SCMs) are installed and functioning properly, inspection and maintenance of these BMPs are a critical part to making sure that they stay working as designed. The Ohio State University and Summit SWCD have developed a curriculum based on Ohio’s maintenance standards and design specifications for Stormwater Control Measures (SCMs). For further information on the Inspection and Maintenance Certification information, courses and dates, please see the following:
